Holywell Golf Club Ryder Cup

HGCRyderCupIt began as an idea from Richie Alli, a match between England and Wales; he had a vision of a competition on the lines of the Ryder Cup and so “The Holywell Golf Club Ryder Cup” came into being.  After much thought about the best way to progress the idea so that anyone in the club could participate it was decided that there would be a “Wales” team but, as there were others in the club neither Welsh nor English, the other team would be the “Rest of the World” team.

So the idea came to fruition with the inaugural match planned for Sunday 4th September, Richie presented the “Ryder Cup Trophy” for the match HGCRyderCup1to the club and appointed the first team Captains and Vice-Captains.  Club Captain Berwyn Parry and Vice-Captain and Ivor Pye were to take charge of the Wales team and “IPC” Pat McDermott and Richie Alli himself would be Captain and Vice-Captain of the Rest of the World team.

The notice went up, names were added and soon the team list was full.  There has been a lot of banter from the Welsh members of the club, the vast majority obviously, about the origins of some of the Rest of the World team members.  It doesn’t matter, parentage is very important, in some cases being born is Wales, whilst an honour, is often a chance of where dad moved to work and so the Rest of the World team was happy.

The day started with everyone meeting for Bacon Bap and Coffee and the announcement of the fouromes parings for the morning matches.  Nine o’clock and the first group teed off to cheers and banter from the rest of the teams.  Lunchtime and everyone was back in for well deserved sandwiches, chips and drink while waiting the afternoon pairings.  Results collated and good news for the Rest of the World team, they were 5 -3 up after the foursomes.

To speed things up it was decided to start the afternoon singles matches from 4 different tees and so the determined fight back from Wales started.  Many of the matches went the full 18 holes and when the tired but happy players eventually came in they were all ready for a well deserved meal and another drink.  Everyone sat down together and although at this time the result was not known, there was a lot of good natured banter about “unlucky bounces”, “missed putts” etc.

Finally it was time for the presentation.  To a lot abuse from the Welsh team and supporters Richie prepared for the result by removing the Welsh flag that someone hadHGCRyderCup2 earlier put in front of the trophy!!

Berwyn Parry as Club Captain welcomed everyone to the club and the event, he thanked Nick for a good meal and the food throughout the day, Andi and Jane for serving and looking after us all day and Pat for organising things.  He especially thanked Richie for the idea and following it through to a successful event and for providing a very nice engraved replica Ryder Cup Trophy.

He then invited Richie to announce the result and present the trophy to the winning team captain.  Richie again thanked everyone for taking part, said how much he enjoyed the day and was pleased to see that everyone else appears to have done so; his only hope now is that this will become an annual event in the club calendar.  He then announced the result and presented the Holywell Golf Club Ryder Cup trophy to the winning team captain Pat McDermott, the Rest of the World team beat the Wales team by 15½ to 8½.
