Captain’s Profile
Our Captain for 2010, Mal Reed, is a local lad, having lived in Pentre Halkyn for the past 22 years and prior to that, in Holywell.
He has been a member of Holywell Golf Club for 25 years, and has been involved with the Junior section for the past five years – the last two as Junior Organiser. He is also an active member of the Match & Handicap Committee.
When approached to become Captain, Mal claimed it came as a bit of a surprise but after talking it through with his family, he was finally persuaded to accept the nomination by his sons Liam and Lewis who told him it was probably the only way to get his name on the boards at the Golf Club!
He has worked for the past 25 years for a Breakfast Cereal Company at Deeside where he currently holds the position of Production Unit Manager.
Mal currently plays off a handicap of 14, but he says he’s aiming to reduce it this year especially with all the golf he’ll be playing!
His year got off to a really busy start, with the AGM, a Gentlemen’s Evening followed by Captain’s drive-in and Fastest Round attempt in the first weekend.
Mal is married to Mags and they have two sons Liam and Lewis. Liam is a former Junior Captain of the club and a regular member of the scratch team and Lewis, six years younger, is a rising star within the Junior ranks.
Off the course Mal is involved with Holywell Juniors Football where he coaches the under-13 team, which he helps to run along with Manager Paul Harrison. He has served on the North Wales Coast Football Association for nearly 30 years and is a Life Member of the Association. He enjoys watching most sports but does not admit to having a favourite football team – although his two lads support Liverpool!
