March Blog
My year as Captain got off to a busy start. Following the AGM at the end of February, we staged a very successful Gentlemen’s Night at the Clubhouse the following evening where we were entertained by a very funny Dusty Young – a great start to my year as Captain, clearly endorsed by those who attended.
My golfing calendar got under way the following day with a 4Ball Better Ball Stableford competition where I was partnered by my son Liam who came home from university to support me through the weekend. Our playing partners were Dougie Peters and Martin Jones. It was a very enjoyable game with both teams scoring under par – long may it continue!
Sunday saw the traditional Captains’ Drive-in and attempt on the fastest round. With snow and strong winds forecast, the outlook seemed bleak. However many members turned up to support us, along with County Captain Dave Pilling, and on behalf of the Lady Captain, Eirian Evans, Junior Captain, Lauren Stanfield and myself, thank you for your support.
Lauren set the bar with a great strike, sending the ball flying down the right-hand side of the fairway. Eirian stepped up next, and not forgetting she was carrying an ankle injury, she too struck a great ball down the right-hand side of the fairway.
Then it was my turn, was I nervous? Not until I witnessed the two girls’ well struck drives, so with some encouragement from the members, pointedly reminding me of the wall to the left of the tee and following a couple of practise swings, I managed to clear my head and strike the ball relatively well down the middle of the fairway. Phew! a sigh of relief, only to realise I had to do it again, some 15 minutes later, to start off the attempt on the fastest round!!
Thanks to Mel Petrie for organising the starting sheet for the fastest round, and to the Juniors for doing the majority of running from greens to tees, but with a time of 24 minutes and 43 seconds, unfortunately it was not good enough to beat the time set by Mark last year.
However there were some amusing observations along the way, such as Newty sporting a very nice ladies coat, teeing up on the Yellows and having to sprint back to the Whites – what a picture!; Astley Jones diving for worms on the 2nd fairway, but still managing to get up and hit a great shot; Kingy showing that there’s life in the old dog yet, doing some spectacular running from greens to tees; Mel Petrie who stepped in last minute, running round the course like a spring chicken; Frankie blaming his club selection on 18 for hitting his shot into the gorse, although I did notice Mark bought him his first pint!! And finally, on the 18th green Lauren apologising as the ball rolled slowly into the hole from 25 feet!
Ironically, the raffle for the time recorded, was won by Eirian’s daughter Vicki who accurately guessed the time.
Thanks to all for the cards and good wishes on the day - we managed to start off the Captain’s charity with £54.00 well earned !! I will update you on the charity in my April blog.
Saturday 6 March started with a very enjoyable game with Vice-Captain Alan Williams, and Vice-President Mark Chacksfield, who both scored under par – well done gentlemen.
The evening saw the traditional Hail and Farewell compered by Club Steward, Graham Savage, where those present witnessed members’ amateur dramatic skills come to the fore.
Starting proceedings was the legend that is, Dennis Davies, entertaining us with his well-honed skiffle music skills, followed by the Ladies Section and their excellent interpretation of All That Jazz (Eirian Evans, Judy Roberts, Joyce Eakins, Christine Williams, Ruby Newell, Brenda Williams, Olive Mitchell, Glynis Hughes).
Lady Captain Eirian together with Carolyne Jones were up next with a fantastic rendition of Hale and Pace’s The Drug Song – an outstanding success – well done girls.
The Gents’ Section followed with a history lesson of how the French claim to have had more influence on golf than anyone ever realised with guest appearances by Renne Artois (played by Brynley Williams), William the Conqueror (myself), Louis XVI (Mark Smale), Napoleon Bonaparte (Mike Jacobs), Inspector Clouseau who very cleverly came in disguise as Andy Pandy – even though he managed to wear his romper suit back to front! (Frank Tweedle), Arsene Wenger (Mark Chacksfield), Lady Captain of Versailles Golf Club, Edith (Ivor Pye), Lady Vice-Captain, Fifi (Tim Saunders) and a rare public appearance these days by the “now cured” Tiger Woods (Matt Parsley).
The entertainment was rounded off very nicely with music by Johnny Cash (Clive Bamford), followed by disco with MC Saunders!
My sincere thanks to all those who participated in a very entertaining and amusing evening – well done to you all.
